Attorney Irene King, the founder of KING COLLABORATIVE FAMILY LAW, practices exclusively collaborative divorce law and offers mediation services to help parting couples restructure their families without going to court.
Irene is the current President of the Mecklenburg County Collaborative Family Law Practice Group. She explains that in the collaborative model, both spouses and their attorneys commit to confidentially share all pertinent information; to communicate respectfully & constructively, participate in conferences, and to refrain from battling their differences in court. Divorce coaches, child specialists & financial analysts are included in the process, as necessary. If either party decides to terminate the process before a settlement is reached, both attorneys must withdraw and the parties must retain new counsel. Irene is a Board Certified Family Law Specialist and Certified Family Financial Mediator with more than 10 years of experience.
Collaborative law is a non-adversarial and private process in which each party is represented by an attorney and assisted by other professionals as needed (divorce coaches, financial planners and/or child specialists). Attorney Laura B. Burt at BURT & CORDES, PLLC is a Board Certified Specialist in Family Law and has extensive training in collaborative law. She points out that with collaborative law, the parties and their attorneys sign an agreement providing that, so long as they engage in the collaborative process, they will not pursue litigation in court.
Laura works with clients in an array of family law matters and appreciates that the collaborative process can bring resolution in even very contentious and messy situations. Laura knows that collaborative law is the dispute resolution process that best enables clients and their families to emotionally move on after a separation or divorce, preserve relationships & marital assets, and arrive at solutions that could never be obtained through litigation.

They also know there are effective alternatives that allow for healthier transitions.
They state that mediation and the collaborative divorce process are based on a shared commitment to minimize emotional & financial damage and create a foundation for effective co-parenting. Sheila is a Certified Family Financial Mediator, a Board Certified Family Law Specialist and is a Certified Parent Coordinator, assisting parents through the ins & outs of a custody order while ensuring the safety and best interests of the children. As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, Kristen is uniquely qualified to help clients understand their current financial situation and to help them determine a financial distribution that makes sense for everyone involved.
ATTORNEY LYNNA MOEN practices collaborative family law, which is a form of alternative dispute resolution that grew out of dissatisfaction with the negative emotional side effects of litigation in family law cases. In collaborative law, both spouses and both attorneys commit contractually to staying out of court, to sharing financial and other information freely.
Lynna is a member of the International Rotary. In addition to collaborative family law, she also practices litigation & estate litigation. The collaborative process seeks to ease a family’s transition and help to establish new communication patterns so that former spouses can be good co-parents. Collaborative law can be an effective dispute resolution method for people dealing with parenting plans, child support disputes or negotiating pre-nuptial or domestic partnership agreements.

Dr. Don Franklin at FRANKLIN PERIODONTICS states that research has found that certain strains of bacteria found in dental plaque may be implicated in heart disease. In patients with periodontal disease, gum tissues are inflamed and bleed easily, leading to introduction of pathogenic bacteria in the bloodstream, which may build-up on heart and blood vessel walls. Immune responses to these bacterial plaques and to vessel walls may lead to heart attack or stroke occurrence. Dr. Franklin refers to the growing body of evidence that suggests that people who have periodontal disease are also more at risk for adverse pregnancy out-comes, respiratory disease and diabetes.
With 18 years of experience, Dr. Franklin is equipped to perform bone and soft tissue regeneration procedures, non-surgical treatments using contemporary antibiotic therapies, the placement of dental implants and cosmetic periodontal plastic surgery for gum aesthetics. He was the first periodontist in NC to be Certified in Laser Periodontal Surgery, and uses this less invasive procedure for the majority of his surgical cases.

Formerly a divorce litigator in California for 30 years, Diane Marlowe at CHARLOTTE FAMILY MEDIATION, LLC emphasizes that couples can control the decisions that affect their family, children, finances, business and life through mediation, which is a voluntary settlement process. Diane is a neutral family dispute mediator who helps people in conflict make practical, informed decisions to resolve the issues before them.
Diane is quick to point out that mediation promotes communication & cooperation, allows you to control the decisions that affect your life, is less costly than litigation, benefits children & others by reducing conflict, and can be completed in less time than litigation -- so you can move ahead with your life. With Diane’s help, temporary agreements can be reached to handle immediate concerns. Couples may then negotiate long-range agreements, which then may be entered as a court order or decree.
With nearly 10 years of legal experience, ATTORNEY CHRISTOPHER ADKINS practices family law, emphasizing mediation & collaborative law. He believes that while mediation & collaborative law are different models, they both embrace the principle that sensitive family matters are best resolved when the parties commit to a private, non-adversarial process for resolution.
Chris is an army veteran (6 yrs) and is a former police officer (7 yrs). He also represents adults & children in family litigation cases. Whether acting as mediator, collaborative lawyer or litigation advocate, Chris has helped numerous clients & families constructively move their lives forward, tailoring the approach and results to the needs and concerns of each individual or, as appropriate, for the family as a whole. Chris believes in hard work, discipline & fighting vigorously for his clients.
